The Wilderness Diary Audio (time: 30 min.)
The Wilderness Diary audio includes excerpts from Barbara Fox-Smith’s journal. She kept the writings as a young woman struggling with bipolar disorder in the 1960s and 1970s. Despite a difficult recovery journey that included hospitalizations, medications and 14 shock treatments, she was able to move forward and live a full life. Barbara’s bond with animals, especially dogs, was integral to her recovery.
In the 1990’s Barbara left her job in manufacturing, bought a house and a few acres at the edge of town, and opened Trademark Kennel, a successful dog kennel. She followed her passion. Barbara had many loyal customers and many devoted 4-legged friends that were her closest companions. Barbara died in late 2019, leaving her writings to her niece, Jessica Farrell, who is a painter and mental health advocate. It was important for Barbara to share her story. She hoped her words would offer insight and resonate with others.
